Prophecies Fulfilled Through the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of Jesus the Christ

"Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are not yet done,...." (Isaiah 46:9-10a)

  --- --- --- --- ---

[Jesus said] "... all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." (Luke 24:44b)

INTRODUCTION: I discussed the Passover as a prophecy and confirmation of the Messiah Jesus in the last newsletter, www.ProphcyNewsSearch.com/en011.html . I wish to continue this detour from an end-time prophecy newsletter to discuss prophecies fulfilled by Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. We celebrate His resurrection on Easter (better term: "Resurrection Day"), which is recognized this year (2009) by Protestant and Roman Catholic faithful on Sunday, April 12.

FULFILLED PROPHECIES: I include only some of the Old Testament prophecies which foretold of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.

Prophecy: [The LORD God said to the serpent-- Satan] "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He [the Christ] shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." (Genesis 3:15)
Fulfillment: This passage, part of the Adamic Covenant, is called the "protevangelium," because it is the first Gospel message of Jesus. God made two promises: (1) Satan will "bruise Jesus' heel," which occurred at the crucifixion. Satan appeared to have a brief "victory" over Jesus, but, as God planned," this "defeat" turned into eternal victory, when Jesus' blood sacrifice became the basis of the New Covenant and when His resurrection proved His promise that we, who follow Him, will also be resurrected to eternal life. (2) Jesus will "bruise Satan's head" by eternally consigning him to the Lake of Fire-- the eternal Hell built for him and those who follow him (Revelation 20:10): And the devil [Satan], who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast [Antichrist] and false prophet are. And they will be tormented forever and ever.

Prophecy: [Moses said] "If a man has committed sin worthy of death, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, his body shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall bury him that day,...." (Deuteronomy 21:22-23a)
Fulfillment: Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath..., the Jews asked Pilate... that they [the bodies of Jesus and the two thieves] might be taken away. (John 19:31)

Prophecy: Come, and let us return to the LORD; for He was torn, but He will heal us; He was stricken, but He will bind us up. After two days, He will revive us; on the third day He will raise us up, that we may live in His sight. (Hosea 6:1-2)
-- AND --
For You [LORD] will not leave my soul in Sheol [abode of the dead], nor will You allow Your Holy One [the Messiah] to see corruption. (Psalm 16:10)
Fulfillment: Previously quoted are passages from Isaiah, chapter 53, concerning Jesus' body torn for our sins; and Matthew, chapter 12, concerning Jesus' promise that He would rise from the dead.
-- AND --
... they [two men in shining garments-- angels-- standing at the empty tomb] said to them [the women coming to prepare Jesus' body for final burial], "Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.'" And they remembered His words. (Luke 24:5b-8)

Prophecy: Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. (Jonah 1:17)
Fulfillment: Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, "Teacher, we want to see a sign from You." But He [Jesus] answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:38-40)
-- AND --
And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is also in vain. (1 Corinthians 15:14)

Prophecy: "I [the Messiah] gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting." (Isaiah 50:6)
Fulfillment: Then they spat in His [Jesus'] face and beat Him;.... (Matthew 26:67)
-- AND --
Then some began to spit on Him [Jesus],.... And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands. (Mark 14:65)
-- AND --
So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. (John 9:1)

Prophecy: He [the Suffering Servant-- the Messiah] is despised and rejected by men, a Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid... our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. (Isaiah 53:3)
Fulfillment: He [Jesus] was in the world, and the world was made through Him and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. (John 1:10-11)

-- AND --
... Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. (1 Corinthians 15:3b)
-- AND --

Prophecy: He [Jesus] was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so He opened not His mouth. (Isaiah 53:7)
Fulfillment: But Jesus still answered nothing, so that Pilate marveled. (Mark 15:5)

Prophecy: And they made His [the Suffering Servant-- the Messiah] His grave with the... rich at His death,.... (Isaiah 53:9a)
Fulfillment: Now when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock;.... Fulfillment: [Peter said] "Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God has sworn with an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne, he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ, that His soul was not left in Hades [abode of the dead], nor did His flesh see corruption." (Acts 2:30-31)

Prophecy: My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, and from the words of My groaning? O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; and in the night season, and am not silent. (Psalm 22:1-2)
Fulfillment: And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" (Matthew 27:46)

Prophecy: He guards all His bones; not one of them is broken. (Psalm 34:20)

Prophecy: All those who see Me laugh Me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, "He trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; let Him deliver Him, since He delights in Him." (Psalm 22:7-8)
Fulfillment: Likewise the chief priests, also mocking with the scribes and elders, said, "He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'" Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing. (Matthew 27:41-44)

Prophecy: My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws; you have brought Me to the dust of death. (Psalm 22:15)

Prophecy: I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. (Psalm 22:17-18)

Prophecy: Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. (Psalm 41:9)
Fulfillment: And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve,... came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. And... immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, "Rabbi, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. (Mark 14:43-45)
- AND --
[Jesus said] "I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with Me and lifted up his heel against Me.'" (John 13:18. Continue reading John 13:21-30, concerning Judas' betrayal of Jesus.)

-- AND --
Therefore He says, "When He ascended on high, He led captives captive, and gave gifts to men." (Now this, "He ascended"-- what does it mean but that He also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.) (Ephesians 4:8-10)

Prophecy: They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. They have also surrounded me with words of hatred and fought against me without a cause. In return for my love they are my accusers.... Thus they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.... When he is judged, let him be found guilty.... and let another take his office. (Psalm 109:2b-5, 7-8)

-- AND --
[God] has in these last days spoken to us by His Son [Jesus], whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand on the Majesty on high. (Hebrews 1:2-3)

CONCLUSION: Please consider the following:

Only a sample: The Scriptures reproduced above are merely a sample-- a small sample-- of Scriptures related to Jesus the Christ. The Old Testament is filled with references to a coming Messiah, and the New Testament is filled with references to the Messiah Jesus who came and fulfilled those prophecies.

Statistical proof: Modern society respects scientific achievements. Many persons reject Biblical accounts because they are based on faith, rather than "science." There is a common language of all sciences-- statistics. Scientists and statisticians use the discipline of statistics to calculate from available data the probability, expressed as the p-value, whether an event or observation may have occurred only by chance alone or is a real phenomenon. For many scientific studies a probability factor (p) of 0.01 is considered sufficient evidence that the event or observation did not occur just by chance. The lower the number-- 0.001, etc.-- the more likely the event is true. With p <0.01, there is less than 1 chance in 100 that the event occurred only by chance. Statisticians have applied statistics to the Biblical descriptions of Jesus to attempt to calculate a p-value (that is, whether these events could have occurred only by chance in any one man's life). The statistics related to Jesus' life develop p-values of astronomical proportions-- values never achieved in any known scientific observation. The Bible has provided such a rich description of Jesus as the prophesied Messiah, that He can be proven statistically to be the Anointed One of God. We should believe in Jesus as Savior by faith alone, but it is nice to have such iron-clad proof to strengthen our faith!
